STORY TOLD by Marco Prüfer & Eugen Fink
Pictures taken with our iPhones ;)
After having the possibility to be part of Nike's breaking2 event in Monza, Italy, Marco and Eugen, again, were offered to participate at a milestone experience. This time through Oregon, USA. From the mountains to the pacific beach to be exact. The name of the event: Hood to Coast (HTC) where it's about running a rout of 199 miles (approx. 320k) in a relay.
Together with two other German fellas (Felix from Cologne and Nike Coach Lucas from Berlin) and us, various other Runners from Europe were invited: UK, France, Italy, Sweden, … all having roots to Run Clubs or being in other relationships with the Nike brand.
So all those people from different cities were put into groups of 10, not knowing each other, not prepared, not trained. That was part of the story we experienced during that trip.
So, Hood to Coast was meant to be about something else than performance. It was meant to be about support, coaching, mentorship and lots of cheering. Eugen and Marco were still pretty much in shape from their race from Los Angeles to Las Vegas. Other team members during the HTC event weren't as prepped. So, time to step in and support! They were both shining as mentors this time, still delivering sick times on the roads of Oregon. Crushing their own legs with paces around 4:00 min/km constantly. But at the same time helping out and pacing other team members who didn't necessarily need the help but were glad to having received it.
That whole trip showed us that sometimes races are not meant to be won. Sometimes, they are rather to be enjoyed! We are thankful for this experience and came back with plenty of new ideas for races in Germany and tons of new friends.
